Partial Transcript: We lived up on the slope of the valley. We could oversee the valley, which is really a very beautiful part of Southern California. Interestingly enough, it is very much today as it was when I was a kid.

Segment Synopsis: Early life was spent on a ranch in Fillmore, a rural town in Southern California. Parents moved there from Caribou, Maine. Agricultural practices at the time were different than they are today. Hardison recalls a Mexican man who used to work on the farm. The family ranch grew citrus and was part of the Sunkist Cooperative.

Partial Transcript: Today we would consider it unfortunate, because my initial elementary schooling was segregated.

Segment Synopsis: Elementary school was segregated; attended an entirely Caucasian school and there were separate schools for the Latino children. Describes the different interests and lifestyles of his three brothers. Recalls teachers that stood out to him. Particularly enjoyed math and civics.

Partial Transcript: Everybody had little home gardens where they could survive. But it was a very difficult time.

Segment Synopsis: Difficulties of teenage years during the Great Depression. Local citrus packing house board decided to dump oranges in the Sespe River because shipping and selling them was so unprofitable and costly. Grandfather was the mayor of Fillmore in 1922. Spent high school years working on uncle's dairy. Bought a $35 automobile.

Partial Transcript: As a matter of fact, from that very moment that I turned in that little house plan in mechanical drawing as a junior high kid, I decided I wanted to pursue architecture.

Segment Synopsis: Recalls the bemusement of his parents at his interest in architecture.Studying in the Department of Architecture at UC Berkeley required many hours of hard work. Tendency of his peers to stray from traditional and classic design, and veer towards more modern styles.

Partial Transcript: It was an extremely difficult time. I also visited every prominent architect—. Well, I should say I visited a lot of architects who were not so prominent. [laughs]

Segment Synopsis: Graduation from UC Berkeley in 1938. Difficulty with finding a job afterwards. Work as an apprentice carpenter, and then in David J. Witmer's firm. Work at the hull department of the Mare Island Naval Shipyard. Fear of a Japanese attack at the Pacific Coast. Meeting his wife and marrying her in 1942.
